Many posts ago, I had written a brief biography of paati. I have now updated it (with this Part 2) Friday, July 31,
2020, on the occasion of Varalakshmi Vratam, from the reminisces of Shri R. Ramanathan, brother
of Venkatesa Iyer.
A short note about Smt. Poornambal, wife of Sri Iyer
The
life and greatness of ri Iyer will not be complete, unless the life and
characteristics of Smt. Poornambal is explained in this biography
Smt.
Poornambal was a village girl, who did not have formal education
through schooling. Her father Sri. Ramaswamy Iyer was an agriculturist,
belonging to Kothangudi village.
He was considered "commander-in-chief", as he completely eradicated
dacoity in that part of the district, and was presented by the British
government with an award for bravery. He used to get double the crop
that others got, even from the limited acreage he had. He also paid his
workers double the wages that others did. As a head-man, his village
(tax) collection was prompt. He did not stoop to petty gains, had a
broad outlook, treating everyone from poor to rich equally.
His daughter Smt. Poornambal was given in marriage to Sr. Iyer in April 1916. Smt. Poornambal
- adored her husband as living God, and behaved as a dutiful wife should, as prescribed in the shastra-s,
- was an embodiment of love and kindness to one and all, relatives, in-laws, friends, poor and rich alike,
- observed pancha-sheel, ie., non-interference. She did not care to know about the status of her husband, what he earned, how much he spent etc., and
- lent her full support to her husband in pursuit of religious practice.
Suffice to say, she was 'poornam' in the walk of life, and a lighting star to her husband.

May Goddess Mahalakshmi/Varalakshmi dispel our (spiritual) poverty and confer all auspiciousness
